“Most of my performances are in straight clubs,” says house music vocal legend MJ White. “The girls love it ’cause they just don’t care, and the guys love it ’cause they’re just a little curious. Dance music has been very good to me,” he laughs. “I’m very sexual onstage, jump up and down and pull people onstage. In gay clubs the guys can be a little stand-offish and not touchy feely, but I’m hoping TO will be different.”

Though he lives in New York, White has a history with Toronto. “I came up there and met Dwayne Minard in a small club on Church St. I introduced myself and he said I was lying,” says White. “Then we recorded ‘Love Is Love’ that was released on the Disco Hed Candy Compilation and did real well.”

White has a powerhouse of a voice that is shown to advantage on a new track, “Sweet Innocence,” where he growls as deeply as Barry White before ascending to a breathtaking falsetto. “I had a high voice when growing up,” he explains. “In church they didn’t want me to use it. I was very self-conscious until I heard Sylvester.” In honour of pop music’s ultimate gay diva, Barry has recorded a sizzling cover version of “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).”

“When I started, I wanted a career in jazz or R&B, but I couldn’t be myself or express myself,” explains White. “With house, if I want to do a gospel or a dirty disco song, whatever I want to do, there’s an audience. I’ve been very blessed. Hard Candy kept the music and money rolling and broadened my audience.”

MJ White performs at Gowntown on Fri, June 25 at Buddies, 12 Alexander St and at the Jaded Edition of Milk on Sun, July 4 at Crews & Tangos, 508 Church St.

“I am excited for another evening of the Village’s most creative and totally ridiculous monthly drag contest, Gowntown.

The B-Girlz, however, take it very seriously, with much work going into the planning and execution of this night that combines computer-controlled visuals, skits and tongue-in-cheek songs.

The contestants themselves are always just a bit off kilter — not your typical Woody’s performers. Take Yura, who performs an odd little ballet with his arms as his legs. Or Paris Hamilton, who, at almost eight feet in heels, has to be the tallest drag queen working.

But winning the wire-hanger trophy and some other odds and ends is third-time entrant Portia Glamour. “I’ve actually been doing drag for 10 years,” she tells me, clutching her trophy to her padded bra. Amanda’s also spreading her infectious vibe overseas via a radio campaign in Australia. While the singer works on her debut with Juno Award winning producer Gavin Bradley (Jack Soul, Nelly Furtado, Tori Amos) and producers Don Kircher and Craig McConnell, she had a hand in writing six of the ten tracks and the songs are a true reflection of her life experiences over the past few years—which range from the fun, free spirited “still a kid” tracks to others that touch on the ups and downs of romantic relationships at her age.

Come out, strut your stuff along side our hosts, Canada's premier drag troupe, The B-Girlz, on Friday Jan 29, 2009 at Tallulah's Cabaret as you clamor for glamour and the coveted "Gownie" as well as a cash prize of $100.

Winner of the coveted GOWNIE (TM) was MARSHA (The Afghan Trannie) who performed Britney, Pussycat Dolls and Lady Gaga in a burka while images of War, oil fires and super models were superimposed on the video screen behind her.

Honourable mention goes to EMILY BRONTE'S BUSH who lyp-danced to the video of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights (video played in background and she did the dance exactly as it was done in the original video!)

DJ Dwayne Minard and Hard Kora ripped up the floor with their special blend of House Music for all the peeps at Buddies. Britney Spears will not be played. Ironically, DJ Dwayne Minard nearly decked someone who wouldn't stop requesting the remix of "Hit Me Baby One More Time".

Thanks to everyone who came out in support of our first, and certianly not last, GOWNTOWN. The audience response was overwhelming and we're excited to make the event even bigger and better in November. The talent in the show is totally undeniable, and we really think we've got the start of a great night out.

CRYSTAL VISIONS walked off with $100 tax free and a GOWNIE (wire hanger) to hang her frock after a stirring live vocal performance ala Stevie Nicks!

Congrats to everyone involved. A a great start to what is to become a monthly favourite. MONA LOTT, TRIXIE & BEEVER, JENNA SYDE, LUPE and DJ Dwayne Minard, you are all stars!

After being pubicly (not a typo) labeled a "little pink pig" by her latest boyfriend, Gary Carruthers, the CPC in conjunction with the CDC probed Barbie-Q to find whether or not she may have been linked to the recent spread of the imminent pandemic.

However, a closer examination of the situation revealed that the only spreading Barbie-Q did was her legs, which resulted in a minor rash contracted by Gary that can be easily rectified with petroleum jelly.
